12 October: garlic, rasps and a waterfall

A morning of breaking up garlic bulbs and then attempting to plant them – initially without a dibber (Anja hadn’t been able to locate one when I asked). I struggle with Maria working at around 20% my speed, painstakingly crafting each hole, or so it seems. We will be here until Christmas at this rate. Why does it matter? Fear of being judged slow, or incompetent? Desire to show up as super efficient? It’s a deep programme and leads to a bit of tension.

After lunch Maya and Yolanda give us foolproof instructions for a walk to a nearby waterfall. And we find it after a short, pleasant stroll through a pine forest, via a mineral-water source. It is an enchanting spot and we both edge in to the plunge pool, and then the waterfall itself, letting the water hammer down on our heads and backs – the best natural jacuzzi ever.

Walking home the mountains, in the slightly hazy light, are exceptionally beautiful.

After supper we sip rosé and nibble cheese – initially Polona but then joined by Maya, Yolanda and Birgitta. At one point the conversation turns to Boris Johnson’s incognito holiday in the 5-star hotel in the village this summer. As mayor, Drejc picked up a call from the press. Not knowing that Boris’ presence was supposed to be under wraps, he inadvertently confirmed his location. It apparently caused a
bit of a ruckus. Well, what do you expect if you don’t keep the mayor informed.
